By now, many of us are aware of the significant delay in the One UI 7 rollout. The Android 15-based firmware for Galaxy devices has been a long time coming. Virtually all other major Android brands have already updated at least all their flagship phones. So, it may sound strange to read that Samsung is sending the One UI 7 update to the Galaxy S21 series “early.”
However, to address the situation, we need to put it into context. After all the delay, Samsung had shared a rollout schedule for the new firmware. So, we finally had an approximate timeframe OF when to expect the update. Over the weeks, that schedule underwent some modifications that helped increase the uncertainty. Anyway, the latest schedule set May as the One UI 7 shipping month for the Galaxy S21 series.
Galaxy S21 devices already receiving One UI 7, first in Korea
Fortunately for Galaxy S21 device owners, they won’t have to wait for some unknown date in May to receive the OTA. Samsung is already rolling out One UI 7 to its flagship phones from early 2021. According to reports (via @tarunvats33), units in the lineup in South Korea are already starting to receive the Android 15-based firmware. It’s normal for users in the company’s home country to receive the new updates first. From there, Samsung will begin expanding firmware availability in the following weeks.
The One UI 7 update for the Galaxy S21 lineup is over 3GB in size. It’s noteworthy that One UI 7 will be the last major OS update the handsets in this series will receive. Samsung announced the S21 devices at a time when its software support policy for flagships guaranteed up to 4 major Android updates and 5 years of security updates. An Android 11-based One UI version powered these phones at launch.
It’s not yet known exactly when the global rollout of the update will begin. However, the “early” shipment to S21 units in South Korea should also speed up the OTA rollout to more regions.
