Google’s big announcement for The Android Show: I/O Edition is Material 3 Expressive. This isn’t a surprise; we’ve seen loads of hints about this. In fact, Google even published the announcement on its blog a couple of weeks early. But now it’s official.

Google says that Material 3 Expressive will be available “first on Pixel devices later this year.”

There are seven main changes that Google is highlighting here with Material 3 Expressive. A lot of which are different animations.

Big changes for the Notification Shade

First up, notifications are getting some changes here. So now, dismissing notifications will look a big different. It will not subtly respond to your drag for dismissing a notification. It’s a little thing, but it does make a difference.

Google has also opted to subtly blur the shade background, which provides for a “sense of depth” according to Google. This makes the motion feel lightweight and you’re able to stay aware of the apps that are being used in the background.

With that, Google is also adding updated dynamic color themes to Android. There’s also new responsive components and emphasized typography that allows you to customize your phone to your style and preferences. Google says that they are working to bring these to other Google apps like Google Photos, Fitbit, and Gmail, which are all shown above.

Material 3 Expressive isn’t just coming to smartphones

Google is also bringing Material 3 Expressive over to Wear OS with Wear OS 6 launching later this year. You’ll get a new fluid design on your watch’s round display. So as you are interacting with the display, you’ll get new scrolling animations that trace the curvature of the display. Also making lists animate which gives you a nice sense of depth. That ends up making the information feel more accessible.

New dynamic color-themeing is also coming to Wear OS 6. Which will let you choose the theme that will best fit your watch face and the entire system.

Finally, Wear OS notifications are getting an optimization as well. With improved performance and optimized power, which will result in about 10% longer battery life. Something that is greatly needed on a smartwatch.

These changes will be part of Android 16 and Wear OS 6, but likely not the first release. We’re looking at more of a QPR1 or QPR2 update later this year.
