WhatsApp to launch AI-generated chat backgrounds via Meta AI: Report
WhatsApp to introduce Meta AI-generated wallpapers based on user prompts, offering custom chat backgrounds with broader AI integration.

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to generate custom chat wallpapers using Meta AI. The tool, which relies on generative artificial intelligence, is designed to enhance chat personalisation by creating unique backgrounds based on user input.
AI-generated wallpapers based on user prompts
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the upcoming feature will let users describe the kind of wallpaper they want using a text prompt. The AI will then generate an image that fits the description, such as 'a starry night over a city skyline' or 'pastel abstract art.'
This marks an expansion of WhatsApp’s existing personalisation options, which currently include solid colours and preset images. The new wallpapers will be compatible with various screen sizes and can be applied either globally across all chats or on a per-chat basis.
Meta has not yet confirmed an official release date, but the feature is expected to roll out gradually in future updates.
Meta AI integration in messaging
The wallpaper tool is part of a broader integration of Meta AI into WhatsApp and other Meta-owned platforms. Meta AI, powered by the Llama 3 language model, has recently been embedded across Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook.
On WhatsApp, users can interact with Meta AI by typing “@Meta AI” in a conversation. This enables access to features such as answering general queries and generating content, including images and now potentially wallpapers. The integration aims to bring AI-powered tools into everyday messaging without requiring separate applications.
Privacy and data handling
Meta has stated that the AI features within WhatsApp are optional and will only respond to messages directly sent to it or containing a mention of “@Meta AI.” All other chats remain end-to-end encrypted, in line with WhatsApp’s existing privacy policies. According to the company, this means that Meta AI does not have access to the content of private conversations unless explicitly invited into a thread.
This distinction is part of Meta’s broader approach to AI deployment across its platforms, where user interaction with the AI is opt-in rather than automatic.
User feedback and interface changes
The addition of Meta AI features to WhatsApp has received mixed responses. Some users have raised concerns about the placement and prominence of the Meta AI entry points within the app. While the tools are optional, their visibility has led to discussions about user experience and interface design.
