Sony Group has said that it plans to increase profit and revenue earned from PS Plus and PS Store, but hasn’t explained how it plans to achieve its goal. In a recent corporate strategy meeting, the company said that it will “maximize average revenue per user” through “personalization” and “pricing optimization.”

PS Plus and PS Store ‘pricing optimization’ sounds like bad news

Under normal circumstances, the words “personalization” and “pricing optimization” wouldn’t be alarming, but given the recent price hikes and quality of service, I’m a bit skeptical.

“Specifically, we will seek higher revenue and profits from PlayStation Plus and maximize ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) of PlayStation Store through the personalization and by pricing optimization,” Sony wrote.

If “personalization” means what I think it means, expect more targeted discount offers that disappoint a large number of long-time PSN users who are locked out of deals, such as PS Plus discounts that only reward new members or those who wish to upgrade to higher tiers only.

I’m not going to speculate on what “pricing optimization” means here, but the only significant pricing developments we’ve seen on the PS Plus front are ongoing price hikes around the globe that feel like a punishment for subscribing, especially to those who get the inferior PS Plus Deluxe option without cloud streaming.

Sony’s a profit-making company, so we understand the need to maximize revenue and profits, but the state of PS Store suggests that it might be a better idea to first improve quality of service and delivery. But what do we know, we’re only consumers.
