Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune is available now on Xbox Series X|S and PC! In this second story pack, Kay Vess and her loyal companion, Nix, team up with legendary pirate Hondo Ohnaka to search for lost treasures in the Khepi system. Star Wars Outlaws Season Pass owners automatically have access to A Pirate’s Fortune, which is also available as a separate purchase.
To learn more about the characters you’ll meet, the new location, new gear for Kay and Nix, contraband contracts, and more in A Pirate’s Fortune, we spoke with Associate Narrative Director John Bjorling:
Kay and Nix will explore the Khepi system in this story pack. What can you tell us about the Khepi system, particularly from a gameplay perspective?
John Bjorling: With A Pirate’s Fortune, we’re very excited to be adding a new space region called the Khepi system, where Kay and Nix venture to in search of a legendary treasure. Khepi features a heavily ionized nebula, which presents its own set of challenges and dangers when navigating, as it interferes with not only the systems of the Trailblazerbut also the programming of ND-5, the modified BX-commando droid who works as an enforcer and looks out for the crew. At the heart of the nebula is the mysterious Khepi Tomb, which holds the treasure they seek, but is currently under the control of Stinger Tash and her space pirate gang, the Rokana Raiders.
The Khepi system also has some other key landmarks, such as Hauler’s Keep, which was once a mining station built directly into an asteroid but is now under the control of the Miyuki Trade League, a smuggling organization that collaborates with all syndicates. Aside from arcade games and ship merchants, this is also where Kay and Nix will be able to take on contracts from the Trade League.
One final location we’re looking forward for players to explore is the mynock lair, where players will encounter the dangerous wildlife first seen in ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’. These parasitic, bat-like creatures move around in swarms and attach themselves to the Trailblazer, causing damageover time until you manage to shake them off.
Can you tell us more about Hondo Ohnaka, Stinger Tash and the Rokana Raiders?
JB: For longtime Star Wars fans, Hondo Ohnaka almost needs no introduction – having appeared in ‘Star Wars Rebels’ and the Galaxy’s Edge ride at Disney parks. The legendary Weequay captain is back, with Jim Cummings reprising the role of the quick-witted scoundrel. This is an interesting time for Hondo, coming between his appearances in ‘Rebels’ and at Galaxy’s Edge, and at this time in his life he’s without a crew or a ship. After Kay receives a message from Hondo meant for the Trailblazer’s former owner, Jet Kordo, she jumps to the mysterious new system in search of the treasure for herself. But once faced with Stinger Tash and her Rokana Raiders, the two scoundrels decide to team up to take on the challenges ahead.
Stinger Tash is the leader of the Rokana Raiders, a pirate gang that aspires to greatness as a group. Following their own version of the pirate code, the raiders make every decision together through a vote, resulting in shared accountability and a high degree of loyalty. With a keen interest in ancient civilizations and lost treasures, Stinger has guided the Rokana Raiders to do the impossible: breach the nebula to claim the lost treasures of the Khepi Tomb.
Ships and space combat feature heavily in A Pirate’s Fortune. Tell us more about the flyable Rokana Raider ship.
JB: As part of the main quest in A Pirate’s Fortune, Kay and Hondo will set out to acquire a Rokana Raider ship to be able to infiltrate the tomb unnoticed. Kay will also get the opportunity to fly the ship, which has unique wings that pivot around the cockpit. When in recon mode, the wings will be vertical, allowing you to travel the galaxy quickly – but when you enter combat, you can switch into assault mode, which will rotate the wings into a horizontal formation and open up additional weapon options to maximize your damage output. The Rokana Raiders’ ships are also designed to withstand the ionization of the nebula, allowing you to explore the secrets and dangers of the system for longer without fear of disabling the ship.
What new outfits and gear for Kay and Nix are included in A Pirate’s Fortune?
JB: After the main quest, Kay will be able to keep the Raider outfit she earns. It also comes with some great perks, which help Kay take less damage and increase her damage output with grenades and pick-up weapons. If you equip the full set, your pick-up weapons will even regenerate ammo over time.
Not to be outdone, Nix can acquire two accessories during his time in the Khepi system. The first is a Miner’s Headcover, which reflects the history of mining rare minerals across the Khepi system. The second outfit – which is a personal favorite – is the Merqaal Corsair, which features a bandana and beaded necklace, allowing Nix to live out his own pirate fantasy.
As part of A Pirate’s Fortune’s side content, Kay will be able to take on contraband contracts for the Miyuki Trade League. What is the Miyuki Trade League, and what’s new and exciting about these contracts?
JB: The Miyuki Trade League is a shady collective of smugglers with a home base on Hauler’s Keep, a new cantina built into an asteroid in the Khepi system. They have an abundance of dangerous smuggling contracts available for pilots they trust – and who are brave enough to take their cargo. These contracts will see Kay and Nix loading up the Trailblazer with dangerous or valuable resources, such as bacta or spice, to deliver it across the galaxy to different syndicates – but the goods are likely to attract unwanted attention, so they will require a skilled pilot to escape with your life and secure the credits.
Progressing with the Trade League will earn you a range of rewards, including new passive systems that can be equipped on the Trailblazer. These passive systems can give you a range of benefits, from reducing cannon heat when you destroy enemy ships, to dealing more damage from your cannons as heat increases, or even reducing the cooldown of your auxiliary system. These new passive systems introduce more strategy and playstyles to dogfighting in space, allowing you to craft a build that works best for you.
