Sometime yesterday, a strange new report of PSN accounts being blocked led to a little bit of panic among players, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Sony was accused of banning accounts made by Russian players in other regions, which caused concern because it’s not uncommon for PlayStation users to create accounts in regions that they’re not based in.
PSN accounts aren’t blocked over region mismatch
The rumor, which circulated on Reddit and ResetEra, was traced back to an obscure Telegram page. It was claimed that Russian players who circumvented Sony’s blacklist by creating accounts in other countries were also banned.
This understandably led to some panic because Sony has always allowed players in countries without PSN support to create accounts in other regions. Then, there are cases where players move countries and take their accounts with them.
My own PSN account, which was created decades ago, has moved continents with me. I have yet to encounter an issue.
The “report” itself ended up being rubbished by players in Russia. It’s unclear how the rumor snowballed, but my guess is that players were banned for breaking terms of service by engaging in activities like buying and selling PSN accounts.
