After months of speculation, Microsoft has finally announced its entyr into the handheld gaming scene with the ROG Xbox Ally series, designed in collaboration with hardware giant ASUS. The new line features the ROG Xbox Ally and the more premium ROG Xbox Ally X, which are scheduled to launch later this December.

If they look somewhat familiar, that’s because they’re modelled after ASUS’ own ROG Ally handhelds, with some new additions built-in such as a dedicated Xbox button that launches into an interface reminiscent of Microsoft’s console UI. They’re also designed with large grips on both sides for added handling and comfort during gaming sessions.
Both models come with 7-inch displays with a 120Hz refresh rate, although the Xbox Ally X is presumably more expensive due to its more capable specs sheet. That being said, the standard Xbox Ally is powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 A chip, paired with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. The Xbox Ally X steps things up with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, a generous 24GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage.
Additionally, the Xbox Ally X features impulse triggers with haptic feedback, USB-C 4 with Thunderbolt 4 support, an additional USB-C 3.2 port, and a UHS-II microSD card reader; the standard Xbox Ally comes with dual USB-C 3.2 ports. The user interface on the Xbox Ally series essentially combines Windows and the Xbox interface, and a dedicated Xbox button provides direct access to a more portable-friendly version of the Xbox UI.
Users can access their game libraries from Microsoft and other storefronts like the Epic Game Store Battle.net, Steam, as well as their Game Pass titles. No pricing has been given yet though, so Xbox fans looking for some on-the-go gaming action might have to wait a bit more for additional details.
