Google recently unveiled Android’s Material 3 Expressive redesign. This bold design refresh will be available on Pixel devices later this year and will extend to the Android and Wear OS ecosystems. Google said that the new UI will begin with Android OS, but it’ll eventually expand across the full Google app ecosystem. We already know that the new UI is coming to Gmail, Google Photos, and more Google apps soon. Now, an APK teardown has given us a glimpse at the Files by Google app’s Material 3 Expressive redesign.
Google is working on a Material 3 Expressive redesign for the Files by Google app
Folks over at Android Authority recently activated codes for Material 3 Expressive redesign components in the Files by Google app’s 1.7528 beta version. In the APK teardown of the app, the publication has found some noteworthy changes to Google’s file manager app’s landing page, image viewer, sidebar, and the progress bar.
As seen in the photos, the updated landing page in the Files by Google app has the Quick Share and File Scanner FABs (floating action buttons). However, instead of placing them in the bottom right corner, Google will soon relocate these buttons to a pill-shaped UI element in the middle of the screen. The new redesign certainly looks cleaner and minimal. Furthermore, the thumbnails for Recents are now larger.
The sidebar and Edit & Circle to Search FABs are also getting a redesign
Furthermore, the APK teardown has revealed that Google is giving a similar treatment to the Edit and Circle to Search FABs in the image viewer within the app. Besides, the sidebar is getting some padding and sizing changes. The spacing between the contents on the sidebar has increased. Also, the “Privacy Policy” and “Terms of Service” options now show up on top of each other at the bottom of the screen.
Another big change Google is adding to the Files by Google app in the Material 3 Expressive redesign is a curvy design for the progress bar. The app now displays a curvy progress bar in the middle of the screen whenever it installs an APK file or compresses files into a ZIP file.
It’s worth adding that not all of the aforementioned changes may make it to the final release. That said, the broader rollout of the Material 3 Expressive redesign will kick off later this year. However, Google plans to debut the design soon with the Android 16 QPR1 beta update.
