Today, at Google I/O, the company announced that Gemini 2.5 Pro will now be available in Android Studio for developers to use to build their apps. It’s going to power the suite of developer tools, and makes it much easier for developers to test and deploy their new apps. It also makes it incredibly easy to debug apps, finding out why they’re crashing on certain devices.
This is a pretty significant update for how Android apps are built, tested and rolled out to the Play Store.
Android Studio Narwhal (2025.2.1) has deep integration with Gemini 2.5 Pro models. This enables AI-powered assistance throughout the development lifecycle. Additionally, developers are able to generate Jetpack Compose previews, transform UI layouts using natural language, and even attach images like UI mockups, which can be used to get code suggestions and explanations from Gemini.
One of the standout features that Google is touting here is the ability to test apps using “Journeys”. This is where a developer can simply describe user flows in plain English and Gemini runs the tests itself.
Gemini can also analyze app crashes and figure out the root cause
Google is also pointing out that Gemini can now analyze app crashes, and also pinpoint the cause of the app crashing. With code-level fixes being suggested. Making it easier than ever to fix bugs in your apps. Developers can review these and implement them directly within the IDE, potentially saving hours of work.
For businesses, Gemini in Android Studio also comes with enterprise-grade security through Google Cloud, allowing teams to scale AI-driven development confidently.
Beyond these features, Gemini now supports referencing project files directly in prompts via the @File feature and lets developers define rules for preferred coding styles and output formats in the Prompt Library. This ensures more accurate, context-aware, and consistent AI-generated code.
