Bignano Ventures Brings Bovine Diagnostic Tech to Rural India
Ahmedabad-based Bignano Ventures pioneers self-testing kits for bovine pregnancy, transforming rural veterinary diagnostics in India.

In an age where human healthcare continues to see rapid technological advances, a vital sector remains deeply underserved—animal preventive healthcare. For Koumal Kalantry along with her founder Gaurav Maheswri and Co-founder Kashvi Kalantry, a routine visit to a gaushala became the unlikely catalyst for a transformative innovation in India's livestock ecosystem. Their startup, Bignano Ventures, was born out of that moment of insight and urgency.
A Divine Spark: From Curiosity to Commitment
The genesis of Bignano Ventures, the Ahmedabad-based startup, began not in a lab, but in a sacred cattle shelter. Witnessing a traditional, and invasive method of bovine pregnancy detection led Koumal, with her background in human diagnostics, to a startling realisation: the tools available for livestock healthcare lag far behind human standards. "Out of curiosity, I asked why no machine was being used," she recalls. That question planted the seed for what would become a mission-driven venture to bridge a glaring gap in veterinary care.
Big Problems, Nano Solutions
Launched in June 2024, Bignano Ventures, whose name encapsulates solving "Big" problems with "Nano" solutions, aims to provide research-driven, affordable, and accessible diagnostic kits for rural farmers.
Its flagship product, a self-administered pregnancy detection kit for bovine animals, allows diagnosis in just 28-35 days after mating or artificial insemination, cutting down the current wait time from 120 days. The test kit, usable for cows, buffaloes, sheep, and goats, delivers results in just 15 minutes with no technical expertise required. "We're not just offering a product; we're building a socio-economic lifeline for rural farmers," Koumal says.
Field-Tested, Farmer-Approved
The Bignano Ventures team, now ten strong, has travelled over 15,000 kilometres to understand ground realities. From cattle fairs on India’s borders to partnerships with dairy cooperatives, they’ve engaged with more than 10,000 veterinary professionals and impacted over 30,000 farmers.
In a market comprising over 300 million bovine animals—75% of which are female—Bignano Ventures is tackling a major inefficiency. With government initiatives like the Rashtriya Gokul Mission and NADCP pushing for advanced veterinary care, the opportunity is vast. Even a 20% penetration in brucellosis testing alone represents a $100 million opportunity.
Transformative Impact
Bignano Ventures' influence reaches well beyond economics. By enabling early pregnancy detection, they help farmers optimise feed use, reducing overfeeding and consequently lowering methane emissions, an often-overlooked driver of climate change.
This environmental benefit is coupled with enhanced food safety compliance, improved milk quality, and better price realisation for farmers. Their innovation is already earning accolades, including the Best Animal Tech Startup award by E-Chai Ventures and coverage on national broadcaster Doordarshan.
Reflecting on the journey, Koumal offers advice to budding entrepreneurs: "Start with belief in your purpose. The idea is enough reason to begin. Resources will follow."
In a sector often relegated to the periphery, Bignano Ventures is proving that innovation, empathy, and purpose can converge to redefine rural healthcare, one test kit at a time.
Boots on the Ground, Eyes on the Future
To date, the founders have been bootstrapped and have focused on awareness campaigns, CSR collaborations, and pilot projects with state bodies. Their strategy prioritises affordability, pricing the kit at a point comparable to traditional methods and accessibility, using the Indian postal network to reach the remotest farmers.
Looking ahead, Bignano Ventures is developing diagnostic tools for critical diseases and handheld analysers, focusing on on-farm usability. "The vision is to become India’s most trusted full-stack animal preventive care brand," says Gaurav Maheswri.
