Beloved Rivals: Apple & Samsung Team Up for iPhone 17's 12GB RAM

Apple’s iPhones typically come with less RAM than their Android competitors. However, it has never been an issue. Apple controls both the hardware and software, which means that it can optimize iOS and its apps to run on whatever RAM is available. But that will change. A report from South Korea claims the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max series will come with a 12GB RAM upgrade made by Samsung.
According to a post shared on X/Twitter by Jukanlosreve, an industry official said, “Apple is finalizing discussions with memory manufacturers to increase DRAM capacity. Some volume has already received approval for supply.”
The post mentions that the 12GB Samsung-made RAM is aimed for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. This could mean that the base iPhone 17 and the rumored iPhone 17 Air will have 8GB of RAM. That said, some sources have also said that the entire lineup will have 12GB of RAM. So, currently the reports are a bit contradictory in this regard.
Apple’s decision to include more RAM isn’t to compete with Android phones. But instead, it’s speculated that the bump in RAM is so Apple can introduce more advanced AI. The company wants to continue its on-device approach instead of sending and receiving data from remote servers. This has its advantages (such as increased privacy) and disadvantages (AI features with inferior capabilities to those of the competition).
More RAM for AI, but what AI?
That being said, we are skeptical of Apple’s AI ambitions. The company showed off some promising concepts at WWDC last year. However, the majority of those features fell way short of the mark. For starters, features like notification summaries were found to contain many errors.
Then there is the Siri revamp, which was meant to give Apple’s ailing digital assistant a much-needed boost. However, that has yet to materialize. We have heard reports suggesting that many of the AI features shown off at WWDC 2024 were cooked up by Apple’s marketing team. It was done without informing Apple’s own engineers. This means that it was merely a concept instead of something Apple is actively working on.
So far, Apple Intelligence has been a joke. So even if the Cupertino company were to increase the RAM on its smartphones for better AI capabilities, what’s the point if its AI is so bad to begin with? Apple is rumored to launch its iPhone 17 series later this year, with the iPhone 17 Air marking a brand new model in the company’s flagship lineup.
