PlayStation IP, franchise, and series

A handful of fans have spotted a subtle change in an official PlayStation intro that curiously ommits a character from a beloved IP. Sometime over the last year, Sony removed LittleBigPlanet‘s Sackboy from its PlayStation Productions intro sequence, giving birth to speculations that the franchise is being shelved for good.

Has PlayStation replaced LittleBigPlanet/Sackboy with Astro Bot IP?

The change was noticed by hawk-eyed fans who watched the Until Dawn movie. As noted by X user realradec, the PlayStation Productions intro no longer includes Sackboy. For reference, here’s the previous version of the animation, in which you can see the character around the 0:15 mark.

“They took out my boy?” asked a fan. “But he was just in that Secret Level episode!” “They are removing the Sack, they can’t just put him out on the street like that,” wrote another.

While we don’t put much stock into changes like these, LittleBigPlanet fans do have a reason to worry. LittleBigPlanet has been delisted, the series servers have been shut down, and developer Media Molecule barely escaped studio closure. While the spin-off Sackboy still lives, it wasn’t well-received.

With Astro Bot becoming the new de facto PlayStation mascot, fans are speculating that Sony is doing away with Sackboy and LittleBigPlanet, filing the latter under legacy IP it won’t revisit, like Killzone and Resistance series, among numerous others.
