Samsung teases next evolution in foldable technology

The launch date for the Samsung tri-fold phone may have just been teased by none other than Samsung itself. A tri-fold phone from Samsung is becoming more and more likely after the company recently held its Q1 2025 earnings call. This wouldn’t be the first time the launch date for the Samsung tri-fold was mentioned. In a report from earlier this week, Samsung’s “Galaxy G Fold,” as it’s rumored to be called, was said to potentially be getting a reveal in July, prior to hitting the market later in the year.
The phone was also rumored back in November of 2024 to launch later this year. So, the timing of the phone’s arrival has remained consistent in the rumors and leaks up to this point. And it doesn’t seem like things are changing, at least not yet.
The launch date for the Samsung tri-fold phone was hinted at during the company’s earnings call
It’s important to point out right away that Samsung does not directly reference a tri-fold phone in its Q1 2025 earnings call. Nor does it mention a specific launch date or launch window. However, it does make a few statements regarding foldables when asked what its strategy for the phone segment is. According to SamMobile, Samsung says its strategy for Foldables will “offer large-screen experiences for Fold.”
Now, this obviously isn’t any direct confirmation that Samsung is already working on a tri-fold phone. Or that it plans to launch one this year. That being said, it’s being interpreted that this particular statement is suggesting that Samsung is referencing a tri-fold device. Mainly because of the portion about the “large-screen experiences for Fold.”
This mention of a “large-screen” experience seemingly signifies that Samsung has a device with a larger screen than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in the works. Samsung’s tri-fold phone has been rumored to come with a 9.9-inch display. So, it’s thought that Samsung is calling attention to this being the “large screen.”
Samsung plans to “innovate” on the foldables form factor
The other part of Samsung’s statements about foldables to pay attention to is its plans to “innovate on the form factor” of foldable smartphones. Samsung could, of course, be referencing some sort of other innovation to be made. Specifically on its current foldables with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7. However, the way Samsung speaks about innovation on the form factor quite likely refers to a new design of foldable that it hasn’t yet offered.
This is merely speculation, since Samsung hasn’t confirmed what it means by these statements. However, these do seem like the most probable inferences. We’ll have to wait until later this year to be certain. But don’t rule out the possibility of learning more at Samsung’s Summer Unpacked event.
