Last weekend’s Marathon PS5 reveal and release date event took a strange turn as much of the discourse began revolving around the game’s potential price. The conversation started following the publication of an article that claimed that Marathon will be a full-priced game, forcing Bungie to issue a clarification.
Sony isn’t ready to reveal Marathon PS5 price yet
In a brief statement, Bungie said that Marathon will be a premium product, but it won’t be a full-priced one. In other words, don’t expect Marathon to be a free-to-play game but it won’t carry a $70 price tag either.
Although some breathed a sigh of relief, others seem surprised. Many expected Marathon to be F2P like Destiny 2. It didn’t help that Bungie wasn’t ready to talk about the game’s price, but did reveal that it’ll launch with three maps and a battle pass.
“So, Bungie looked at Concord and basically said, ‘Let’s do that but in an even more niche genre,'” read one comment on Reddit. Similar comments popped up on other gaming forums and social media. Others argued that players are writing Bungie off prematurely.
“It’s not going up against games like Fortnite or Overwatch and is nothing like Concord,” a Reddit user wrote back. “Why the hell are users so insistent on this game failing like Concord?” wrote another.
At this point, we can only speculate what Marathon’s price will be. Our semi-educated guess is that it’ll be around $40, like Helldivers 2.
