Sony’s rumored new PlayStation handheld, which will supposedly be part of the PS6 family, may have had one of its specs leaked. A known AMD insider has asked players to temper expectations as the portable device won’t be as powerful as the PS5.
New PlayStation handheld has been rumored for a while but Sony hasn’t confirmed its existence
The rumor comes from KeplerL2, who was the first person to leak the existence of the upcoming handheld before their report was corroborated by others including Digital Foundry. According to the leaker, the device will pack a 15W system-on-a-chip on 3nm.
In layman’s terms, don’t expect the PS6 handheld to be on par with the PS5. This doesn’t mean that it won’t be able to run PS5 games. It’ll just do so on lower resolutions and frame rates due to lower memory bandwidth. “Hard to estimate performance since it’s using an unreleased GPU uArch, but I think it’s somewhere between Xbox Series S and PS5,” Kepler added.
Although we expected this to be the case, some players have expressed concerns about Sony releasing an “underpowered” handheld in presence of PC handhelds. However, we doubt that the idea here is to have a portable version of a high-end console or PC that costs an arm and a leg.
