Google Confirms Samsung’s Project Moohan Will Be First to Run Android XR

Google also announced today at Google I/O that Android XR will be available first on Samsung’s Project Moohan. This headset is set to launch later this year, as Google also confirmed during The Android Show: I/O Edition last week.
We don’t know specifically when the headset could launch, but we would expect it to launch this Summer with Samsung’s foldable devices, or perhaps in the fall when they typically launch the new “FE” devices.
Samsung has shown off Project Moohan a handful of times already, including at Unpacked in January and again at Mobile World Congress in March. But we still don’t have an official name for the headset. We also have very few details on this headset, other than the fact they are working with Qualcomm and Google on Android XR. So it’s likely running on one of Qualcomm’s XR chipsets.
XREAL is joining the Android XR family
XREAL also announced today that it will be making an Android XR device, called Project Aura. This is going to be a portable and tethered device that would give users access to their favorite Android apps, including those that have been built for Android XR.
The company isn’t revealing a lot about these XR Glasses just yet, but XREAL did say they would release more details next month at the Augmented World Expo. Project Aura will launch as a developer edition, this is specifically so that developers can start creating and experimenting with different apps for XR on glasses.
Google also released Android XR’s Developer Preview 2 today, with loads of updates to the APIs and making tools much easier to use to build for Android XR. It is also getting the Play Store ready to host Android XR apps, with 2D apps that are supported on Android XR also being highlighted.
