Microsoft announced it will raise prices for Xbox products across the board beginning today, May 1. This includes video games, which are typically priced at $69.99. As of right now, the currently released first-party titles are at their normal prices, but players should expect future new releases to cost up to $79.99.

Will PS5 games increase in price like Xbox?

Announced by Microsoft, the Xbox video game price increases are being made globally. It will not impact games already released, or ones just on the horizon, like Doom: The Dark Ages. However, the company’s support page does confirm that “some” of its first-party games will launch at $79.99 this holiday season.

Microsoft also confirms this pricing adjustment to its Xbox games will affect both physical and digital versions. So, players should expect to see that $79.99 price tag across the board once it is implemented this Holiday season.

An in-depth reason for why the price change for Xbox’s video games was implemented was not given. However, Microsoft attributes the current “market conditions” and “rising cost of development” as key reasons for this change.

“We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development,” says Microsoft’s announcement. “Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players.”

As of this writing, Sony is not increasing the price of its first-party titles. However, this does confirm that Xbox first-party games that do come to PS5 will start at $79.99.

Sony may not be increasing its prices of PS5 games, but it has increased its prices for its PS Plus subscription and console, depending on the region. The PS5 console saw a price increase in Japan last year. It has also increased the price of its online service in several countries. While both of these recent changes haven’t hit the U.S. quite yet, there is certainly a possibility.
