Swiggy temporarily shuts down Genie, cites operational issues

Quick commerce and food delivery player Swiggy has temporarily shut down its intra-city parcel delivery service, Swiggy Genie, citing operational issues, the company's customer care service said in an X post on Saturday while replying to a customer.

While Swiggy did not issue an official statement, the X post confirmed "no concrete timeline" for Genie's return yet, and the team is working to get the service up and running.

Earlier in 2022, Swiggy had shut down the service in select cities, citing heavy demand from its food delivery and quick commerce operations, which rely heavily on its delivery fleet.

Inc42 reported the development first.

Delivery partners, which are the backbone of hyperlocal quick commerce and food delivery operations, are seeing heavy demand from platforms as the quick commerce game heats up.

"Shortage (temporary) of delivery partners due to high demand of delivery partners in quick commerce, given the rapid expansion of the industry in the last few months," noted Eternal, which operates food delivery platform Zomato and quick commerce leader Blinkit, for slow growth in food delivery in the current quarter.

Swiggy is expected to report its annual and fourth-quarter results on Friday, May 9.

Swiggy Genie, which competes with players like Porter, Rapido Parcel, and Borzo, among others, was launched in 2020 and was scaled to multiple cities.
