OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT users can now access its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models. The company first introduced these two models in April, but they have only been available through its developer-facing API. GPT-4.1 is the latest flagship model from OpenAI, while the next step down is GPT-4.1.

GPT-4.1 for ChatGPT is better at coding tasks and following up on instructions

According to OpenAI, the GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models outperform GPT-4.o and mini variants when it comes to coding tasks and instruction following. They also provide larger context windows—offering support for up to 1 million tokens of context—and can better use that context with enhanced long-context comprehension.

Software engineers and coding enthusiasts can leverage OpenAI’s new GPT-4.1 model to develop web applications, thanks to its smarter and faster capabilities compared to the previous generation. They can use the GPT-4.1 mini model for coding, daily queries, follow-up questions, and other complex tasks.

It’s worth mentioning that the AI research community criticized OpenAI for shipping GPT-4.1 without a safety report. These researchers claimed the company was lowering its standards of transparency in its AI models. However, the AI firm argued at the time that despite offering improved performance and speed over GPT-4o, the GPT-4.1 model doesn’t need the same safety reporting that more capable models do, as it’s not the frontier model.

“GPT-4.1 doesn’t introduce new modalities or ways of interacting with the model, and doesn’t surpass o3 in intelligence,” said OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems Johannes Heidecke in a post on X Wednesday. “This means that the safety considerations here, while substantial, are different from frontier models.”

The GPT-4.1 models are now rolling out to free and paid ChatGPT users

The GPT-4.1 model is now rolling out on ChatGPT to paid users, which includes ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. On the other hand, the GPT-4.1 mini will be available to both free and paid ChatGPT subscribers as a default artificial intelligence model for everyday use.

Furthermore, with new models, ChatGPT users can access more AI models in the dropdown menu. Therefore, they can select a preferred artificial intelligence model based on the complexity of their desired tasks. It’s worth adding that to use GPT-4.1, you’ll need to opt for the subscription plan that starts at $20/month and goes up to $200/month.

You can also choose the ChatGPT Team subscription, which costs $25 per month for a single user and allows you to configure it to add two or more users.
