Mortal Kombat 1 development ending - report

Today, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games revealed Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, which packs the base game, expansion, a much more in one package. However, the use of the term “definitive” seems to indicate the studio is likely ending DLC support for the game.

Will Mortal Kombat 1 receive DLC in the future?

The amount of content Mortal Kombat 1 has received since its launch in 2023 isn’t all that different from Mortal Kombat 11 or Mortal Kombat X. Both of those games also just had two fighter packs, with the former also having a story expansion. So, in terms of DLC content, this is expected.

However, what makes this decision a bit jarring is the claims of Mortal Kombat boss Ed Boon, who has alluded to “years” of content for Mortal Kombat 1. The game was released in September 2023, which means it has been a little over a year and a half since it launched. A recent post on ResetEra links to a couple of tweets that have videos of Boon making said claims.

Although NetherRealm Studios or Warner Bros. Games haven’t announced they are ending DLC support for Mortal Kombat 1, any “Definitive” or “Game of the Year” Edition typically indicates the developer is done making notable DLC for the game. That doesn’t mean new skins won’t pop up from time to time, but it may be safe to assume something like an expansion isn’t on the table.

The Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for $69.99, and on the Nintendo Switch for $59.99. There is an upgrade available for those who already own the game. The PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC upgrade costs $59.99, while the Nintendo Switch upgrade costs $49.99. It includes the base game, the Khaos Reigns story expansion, and a slew of skins.
