It has been several years since LG announced that it will be quitting the smartphone business. However, even though the company called it quits, it didn’t mean that it was absolved of the responsibility it had to existing customers. This is why LG continued to maintain its update servers for its smartphones.

But that’s coming to an end too.

LG shuts down update servers for its smartphones

LG has announced that on the 30th of June, 2025, it will be shutting down its smartphone update servers. This means that if you are still holding onto your LG phone or have an old LG phone lying around, now’s your last chance to grab the latest/last update before it is gone for good.

LG hasn’t really issued any new updates since. We doubt the company will be releasing anything new from now until the servers shut down. However, it’s still not a bad idea to grab the latest update anyway. That being said, we have to wonder how many customers this will really affect.

We can safely assume that once LG announced its plans to quit the mobile business that its customers probably switched to a different brand.

LG’s exit from the market

Both LG and Samsung are Korean conglomerates that compete in a lot of the same markets. We’re talking about the display business, TV business, monitor business, as well as household appliances like refrigerators, air conditioning units, and washing machines, just to name a few. So, when both companies started competing in the smartphone space, it hardly came as a surprise.

When Samsung was busy trying to push its foldables out, LG actually headed down a different path with a rollable display. The company was poised to launch the first smartphone with a rollable display. However, to everyone’s surprise, LG decided to exit the smartphone market in the same year.

Unlike Samsung, who typically plays it safe with their phones, LG had some pretty wacky ideas. For example, it hopped on board the glasses-free 3D smartphone with the LG Optimus 3D. It also tried its hand at modular phones with the LG G5.

Since smartphones became the new standard in mobile devices, we’ve seen many companies come and go. Apart from LG, other notable exits from the business include Nokia, BlackBerry, Sony, and HTC. Some still push out devices every now and then, but their place in the market is pretty insignificant.
