i4 Marine: Driving Innovation in India’s Water Infrastructure

With India’s 7,500-km-long coastline, vast inland waterways, and mounting challenges in water security and infrastructure, the need for advanced, sustainable, and autonomous marine solutions has never been more pressing. Pune-based startup i4 Marine Technologies Pvt. Ltd. is stepping boldly into this niche, offering a pioneering blend of Indigenous Innovations, Intelligent Integration, and eco-conscious design to transform how India utilises its aquatic environments.

A Vision Born from National Need

India’s maritime domain faces dual imperatives: ensuring coastal security and unlocking the economic potential of inland and offshore waters. Whether it's for aquaculture, water quality monitoring, or inland waterway navigation, the country requires robust and intelligent marine systems.

Recognising this, a group of seasoned technologists and entrepreneurs founded i4 Marine Technologies to spearhead innovation in Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), and marine sensor systems.

Founders with Domain Authority

i4 Marine Technologies is helmed by CEO Alok Mukherjee, a retired DRDO scientist and a pioneer in unmanned defence robotics. He leads a founding team with deep domain expertise across engineering, design, and marine systems.

Sunny Sebastian brings over 35 years of experience in boat building, while Raja Mahbubani, an IIT-Bombay alumnus, is known for his work in cutting-edge electronics and unmanned systems.

Prakash Khanzode adds strength in design, with decades of experience in industrial product innovation. Supporting the team’s technical backbone is Dr. Sanjeev Afulpurkar, a former scientist at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), who now serves as the company’s Chief Technology Officer.

Innovation Anchored in Practical Utility

i4-Marine’s portfolio addresses diverse aquatic needs:

  • AQUA SCANNER: An ASV designed for bathymetric surveys in canals, rivers, ports, and dams. Equipped with sonar and capable of real-time data transmission.
  • AQUANAUT: A lightweight Remotely Operated Vehicle for underwater inspections—ideal for dam walls, ship hulls, and bridge piers—with AI-enhanced HD video streaming.
  • Smart Buoys: Modular systems for real-time oceanographic data, acoustic profiling, and environmental surveillance.
  • AQUASCANNER-COASTAL: An electric-powered catamaran for autonomous coastal surveys and patrolling.
  • AQUASOLA Series: Solar-electric ferries (2-seater to 12-seater) designed for green tourism and light transport.
  • AQUA FeebBot series: Autonomous (unmanned) mobile feed and nutrient dispensers for shrimp farms, with optional add-ons like water quality monitoring.

Dual-Use Technology for Civil and Defence

Although built primarily for scientific and civil applications, these platforms possess significant defence utility:

  • Coastal and underwater surveillance
  • Submarine communication support
  • Radiation and environmental monitoring near strategic sites

Collaborative projects such as the ASV-ROV Marsupial System and Long Endurance Stealth Craft underline i4 Marine's commitment to future-ready defence infrastructure.

Funded by Innovation, Fueled by Collaboration

Supported by innovation hubs at IIT Hyderabad, Delhi, Bombay, and Guwahati, i4 Marine's growth is bolstered through a mix of equity, grants, and loans. Strategic MoUs with institutions like CDAC-Thiruvananthapuram, DIAT-Pune, and MIT College Pune amplify their research bandwidth.

Infrastructure with a Vision

Their riverside R&D facility in Pune is equipped with a jetty, a boat shed, mechanical workshops, and electronics labs, laying the groundwork for sustained innovation in aquatic mobility and monitoring.

A Future Shaped by Intelligent Water Management

Looking ahead, i4-Marine Technologies envisions scalable, intelligent platforms integrating big data analytics, machine learning, and AI-driven sensor fusion to support national agendas in climate science, water resource management, and security.

By bridging technological prowess with ecological foresight, i4 Marine Technologies is not just building machines, but catalysing a marine revolution.
