YouTube is now testing a discounted two-person premium subscription tier, so two people can split the cost. This is something that users have been requesting for a long time. Why? Well, at the moment, they can only get a single-person subscription or a family plan. The former is way too expensive, and the latter is not, but you do require a handful of people to make it worth it.

YouTube could allow you to split the ‘Premium’ subscription with your loved one… or a friend

Well, YouTube seems to be testing a new Premium subscription plan in select countries. TechCrunch managed to get a confirmation of that, following Money Control’s initial report on the development.

YouTube is testing the new subscription plan in India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. “We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option in some countries, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost,” said a YouTube spokesperson.

Much like Spotify, with its Duo subscription tier, YouTube aims to allow two people who live together to access YouTube Premium for a discounted price. This is something yours truly needed quite some time ago, but was not available.

This is YouTube’s way of appeasing people following price hikes

YouTube likely believes that this plan would push people who perhaps canceled their Premium plans after price hikes in recent years to give Premium another shot. It does make sense, kind of, though it’ll all depend on the price.

This test follows the launch of the Premium Lite tier, which allows users to watch “most” videos ad-free for $7.99 per month. That plan is currently available only in the US, Australia, Germany, and Thailand.
Another interesting fact is that YouTube Music and YouTube Premium subscriptions combined now reach over 125 million users all over the world, YouTube confirmed.
