The PS Store is far from perfect, but it has somehow gotten worse. It is no secret Sony’s digital storefront for PS4 and PS5 houses shovelware. However, it seems it’s beginning to put that slop front and center, as some players have reported games clearly imitating popular PC games have made it onto the store’s “Trending” section.
3 of the top 5 trending games currently on PS Store are scams
On the PlayStation subreddit, a user shares an image of the current “Trending games” section on the PS Store. Three of the five of these are scams. Specifically, these games are titled to trick players into thinking they are popular PC releases. Two of these are ripping off the cooperative horror game REPO, while the other imitates the drug dealer simulator Schedule 1.
This is a pretty big issue regardless of these titles being featured in the PS Store’s Trending games section. However, these three games being front and center elevates the issue quite a bit. Being in the Trending games section gives the clones a bit of legitimacy, which has led to consumers assuming they are the games they are mimicking.
This has led to some players purchasing the fakes, and demanding refunds. Yesterday, we reported on REPO: Ghost Haul, one of the aforementioned clones plaguing the PS Store. PlayStation players have fallen for the trick and have begun to ask for refunds. Historically, if a player downloads a game, it becomes ineligible for a refund. However, one Reddit user claims it should be possible with that specific game as it falsely advertises itself as a multiplayer game.
While it would be nice if Sony could do something about its shovelware issue, it does not seem a fix will be implemented any time soon. Until then, players should ensure that the game they are purchasing is the one they actually want.
