Summary: NVIDIA is setting up AI supercomputer factories in various US cities. These plants will start mass producing by the next year, and power AI applications around the world.
As NVIDIA’s new chips start production in Phoenix, Arizona, the company has announced plans for further expansion. NVIDIA is building multiple AI supercomputer manufacturing plants in various U.S. cities.
These factories will start operations within the next year, ramping up NVIDIA’s domestic manufacturing capability. The company is planning to set up more such plants in the coming years, partnering with semiconductor titans like TSMC and Foxconn.
The plants in Arizona are already operational. TSMC established these to manufacture cutting-edge semiconductors, including specialized AI chips. NVIDIA’s brand-new Blackwell architecture is already being mass-produced, marking the beginning of U.S. chip production.
The importance of domestic semiconductor manufacturing
As of now, virtually all of the high-end chips used in PCs are imported from Taiwan. TSMC is the world leader in semiconductor fabrication, making the entire industry dependent on imports.
But as supply chain woes during COVID-19 showed us, this can be a risky situation. To alleviate this issue, the U.S. government has been trying to encourage domestic manufacturing. The plants by TSMC in Phoenix, Arizona, were the first announced, and as of now have finally gone live.
TSMC is setting up multiple advanced fabs in Arizona, producing the top-end chips in the U.S. itself. Companies like Amkor and SPIL are taking care of the packaging and testing of these chips, bringing the entire supply chain home.
What are AI supercomputers?
The rise of AI has created a demand for a new type of computer. Standard chips don’t perform well for AI computations, and even GPUs aren’t the best answer.
To meet this demand, companies like NVIDIA have designed specialized AI supercomputers. These chips can process AI calculations efficiently, making them the workhorse of this new direction.
NVIDIA is looking to set up AI factories powered by these AI supercomputers in the U.S. And to manufacture these AI supercomputers, factories are being set up on shore as well.
For example, there are plants coming up in Houston and Dallas. These will create thousands of jobs as well, supporting the push for revitalizing the U.S. manufacturing sector.
A network of partnerships
NVIDIA isn’t pulling off a massive project like this alone. It is partnering with manufacturers like TSMC, Foxconn, and Wistron to set up the new factories.
Furthermore, Amkor is the partner for packaging the wafers into chips, and SPIL is responsible for testing and assembling them. Soon, the U.S. will have the capability to produce advanced semiconductor chips from start to finish on its shores.
