Summary: Google today announced the “Discover sources” feature in NotebookLM, which allows users to search for relevant sources directly within the app. The new feature provides up to 10 most relevant sources alongside annotated results and can be easily imported into projects.

Google has been frequently pushing new updates to NotebookLM, its AI-powered notebook and research tool with Gemini. Late last month, the AI tool got the ability to generate Mind maps. Today, Google announced yet another update for NotebookLM, which adds the new “Discover sources” feature.

Google updates NotebookLM with a new source finder feature

As the name suggests, the new feature helps you find sources for whatever you are working on. The new feature saves your precious time by allowing you to do web searches within the application. Google notes that you can find the new “Discover sources” button in the “Sources” pane right next to the “Add” button.

When you click “Discover sources” in NotebookLM, you will see a search option where you can describe your topic of interest. NotebookLM’s Gemini-powered search engine then starts its magic. It scours the web and gathers possible sources related to your request. The AI-powered tool then analyzes all the sources and picks the most relevant ones based on your defined topic.

Finally, you are presented with up to 10 recommended sources. Notably, each of them comes with a short, annotated summary explaining its relevance to your topic. Not to forget, it just takes one click for you to import these sources. You can also pick discovered sources separately and use them with other NotebookLM features, including Briefing Docs, FAQs, and Audio Overviews.

The new feature ensures an efficient workflow

With this new feature, Google ensures that NotebookLM allows you to utilize newly discovered sources within existing projects, streamlining your workflow. Whether you want to use these sources for citation, taking notes, or later review, they are always accessible to you. For new NotebookLM users, Google will also add the “I’m Feeling Curious” button. You can find it right below the text field and generate sources for random tropics.
