PSN outage February

GameStop’s social media team decided to chime in on February 2025’s massive PSN outage, only to end up being trolled right back. The downtime was quickly picked up by mainstream news channels, with companies like Krispy Kreme seizing the marketing opportunity (by offering free donuts as compensation). GameStop also jumped on the bandwagon, but it backfired.

How GameStop’s tweet about February’s PSN outage backfired

Once a retail giant and now barely a shell of its former self, GameStop threw shade at the shift towards digital downloads. While many did agree with the tweet in principle, they pointed out that GameStop itself contributed to the decline of physical media at retail.

While it’s true that GameStop’s woes were made worse by a shift towards digital content, its problems started well over a decade ago, thanks to questionable management practices and policies. PlayStation LifeStyle’s coverage of the retailer spans almost 17 years, much of which was one bad news after the other.

Almost 10 years ago, for example, GameStop was blaming Metacritic for declining pre-order sales — a measure that’s still widely used in the industry to gauge interest in upcoming games.

Frankly, we’re surprised GameStop still exists given that it’s folded in a large number of locations.
