Summary: Apple has reportedly started production on the Vision Pro 2, aiming for a launch later this year despite earlier rumors of cancellation. While details are scarce, Apple will need to fix issues like price, battery design, and ecosystem limitations if it wants to avoid another flop.

They say the third time’s the charm, so Apple is actually now on its second chance for the Vision Pro. Chinese publication IT Home reports that Apple has kicked off production of the Vision Pro 2, with the headset apparently set to launch later this year.

Vision Pro 2 production begins

According to the report, key components for the headset, including the panels, housing, and circuitry, have entered mass production. This is actually pretty interesting. This is because back in 2024, The Information reported that Apple was planning on stopping production of the original Vision Pro by the end of 2024. We even heard rumors that the Vision Pro 2 could be cancelled.

However, this new report suggests otherwise and that Apple plans on launching a new model by the end of the year. Unfortunately, we don’t know much about what the Vision Pro 2 will bring to the table. To be fair, the original Vision Pro was already pretty good. It performs as advertised.

However, there were several issues that held it back from mass appeal. For starters, it’s just too damn expensive. The ecosystem is also lacking, which means that unless you’re an early adopter type of customer, most people won’t really have much use for the headset. Lastly, the non-removable battery pack is also a major pain point.

Unless Apple can address some of these issues with the Vision Pro 2, we could be looking at another failed product launch.

The future of Apple’s XR ambitions

That being said, Apple’s future for XR is murky. We heard that Apple was planning on releasing a pair of smart glasses in the future. However, a subsequent report claimed that the company had cancelled the project.

But we have a feeling the company isn’t quite ready to throw in the towel yet. For example, iOS 19 will be announced at WWDC 2025. According to the rumors, it will be the biggest redesign to iOS since iOS 7. Reports claim it takes heavy inspiration from visionOS, with icons and buttons featuring a glassy-like finish.

In any case, as with all rumors, take this with a grain of salt for now. Apple is hosting WWDC 2025 in June. We’re not sure if the company will announce the Vision Pro 2 at the event. But if it were, that would be a good place to do it.
