Summary: Apple has delayed the AirPods Max’s new software update that would’ve brought the lossless audio feature. The new firmware is technically live on the company’s servers, but users aren’t able to get it yet on their devices. A bug in the iOS 18.4 update seems to be causing the delay.
Last week, Apple announced the lossless and ultra-low latency audio features for the AirPods Max. The company planned to release a new software update to introduce these functionalities that would have made the $549 AirPods Max worth their high-end price tag. Unfortunately, the owner of the accessory will have to wait a little longer. Reports suggest that the company has delayed the rollout of the AirPods Max software update that includes lossless audio.
AirPods Max users will have to wait a little longer for the lossless audio feature
The Apple AirPods Max’s much-anticipated firmware build number “7E99” is currently on hold due to an issue in the iOS 18.4 update. Its new software update is technically live on the servers of the Cupertino tech giant. However, affected users are not yet able to get it on their USB-C AirPods Max units. Apple’s updated support webpage just mentions that the new firmware with the new audio features is “coming soon.”
Developer Aaron Peris was one of the first people to spot this problem. The new firmware build is available on the company’s backend, but the new iOS 18.4 update fails to push it to the headphones.
The update will enable music playback with the highest fidelity
Once you receive the new firmware update, you’ll be able to enjoy the highest fidelity sound possible on your AirPods Max. After the update, you’ll be able to play 24-bit 48 kHz audio using these headphones. It’ll be a nice addition if you want to enjoy your music with just a bit more definition.
Furthermore, the lossless and ultra-low latency audio features are exclusive to the new AirPods Max. If you have the older Lightning AirPods Max, then you won’t be able to access these functionalities. We will inform you as soon as Apple fixes the bug and releases the new features to the AirPods Max, so stay in touch for regular updates.
