If you follow the tech industry, the name Sam Altman will surely sound familiar. He’s the CEO of OpenAI, the world’s leading AI-focused company and parent of ChatGPT. While OpenAI is quite busy developing new AI models, Altman is also involved in other projects. One of them is a startup that has launched an eye-scanning platform in the US for identity verification and login on online platforms.

“World” eye-scanning technology, backed by Sam Altman, debuts in the US

Tools for Humanity, the startup co-founded by Sam Altman, has announced the arrival of World in the United States. “World” stands for the eye-scanning-based identity verification system. According to Altman, the technology is designed as “a way to make sure humans remained central and special in a world where the internet had a lot of AI-driven content.” As CEO of OpenAI, Altman has focused the company’s mission on the current context of the reign of artificial intelligence.

That said, World didn’t always have this focus. Initially, the technology was called “Worldcoin” and had a strong crypto influence. However, the company reversed the project’s goal after noticing some reluctance from the Biden administration toward the crypto world. Thus, the firm simply dropped the “coin” from the name and pursued a different path to avoid potential regulatory hurdles.

World uses spherical devices called Orbs to scan the user’s eye. The system processes the iris data and converts it into a so-called “IrisCode.” IrisCodes are unique to each user and are the basis for creating a World ID. People can then use the World ID to log in to compatible platforms. The current list includes popular games and forums such as Minecraft and Reddit.

World abandoned its heavy crypto focus, but it still retains some of its roots. Users who access the eye scan would receive a portion of a cryptocurrency linked to the project.

Privacy and security

According to Tools for Humanity, World has some access to user data. However, the firm claims this is for security reasons, to ensure there is no duplicate biometric data. The team also says the collected data is stored in a way that remains decentralized and anonymous. This means that even in the event of a potential hack, the information could not be used to identify someone.

The World project has more devices on the way. One is the “Orb mini,” which is shaped like a smartphone. This one is designed to become a mobile point-of-sale device. Of course, it will also have identity verification capabilities. Tools for Humanity will also launch a Visa World card for users of the technology. In addition, they will start tests on Tinder Japan for verification not only of identity but also of age.
