NVIDIA's RTX 5090 GPU isn't done melting cable connectors

Summary: An RTX 5090 GPU is reportedly the culprit of melting another cable connector, causing damage to the GPU and other components. This isn’t the first time people have had issues with these GPUs, raising questions and concerns that it might happen to more units.
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 GPU has had a bit of a rough start for one reason or another, and that unfortunately includes the GPU melting the cable connectors that hook up to the power supply. The other main issue is the cost. As numerous RTX 5090 GPUs are vastly more expensive than NVIDIA touted during its CES 2025 keynote earlier this year. But that’s a conversation for another time.
That being said, the cost is a factor to consider if you have to worry about the GPU frying your components. There hasn’t been a report of this happening for a little while, but it now seems there has been another user facing this problem. This also poses a bigger problem in general with the RTX 5090 – Consumers having to deal with the possibility of buying the card and then being without a gaming PC until things get fixed. Which could be more than a minor inconvenience.
An RTX 5090 from MSI is behind the melting connectors
At this time, isn’t doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue. So it’s likely that this may be a one-off. Although it’s worth keeping the details in mind, just in case you were planning to get the same GPU model. According to a post on Reddit (via XDA), user u/Roachard claims their MSI Gaming Trio OC melted their cable connector that went from the GPU to the power supply. Photos have been provided in the post, and you can clearly see the melted bits on the connector.
The power supply was damaged as well
The melting connectors are a bad enough problem all their own. However, it appears that it’s not limited to the GPU cable connector. The GPU is also said to have damaged the power supply. In addition to the MSI Gaming Trio OC RTX 5090 GPU, the user also mentions the rest of their setup. This includes an ASUS Strix B650E-I motherboard, an AMD 9800 X3D CPU, a Corsair SF1000L power supply, and an original 12vhpw cable rated for 600w.
The user says the cable “came with the PSU plugged directly into the PSU” and “had no extensions.” As of now, there’s no resolution that’s been posted by the user. So, it’s unclear if an RMA is going to be the route they take and whether or not it’ll be honored.
Therein lies yet another problem. If this happens to you, will your purchase be protected? You’d think it would be, given this particular GPU is less than a month old judging from the purchase photo. When it comes down to it, you want to be protected when spending this kind of money on tech.
