iPhone 17 Air Might Require a Battery Case to Offer Decent Battery Life

The iPhone 17 Air will be the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever produced, or so the rumors claim. To make the phone as thin as possible, Apple had to compromise on certain features, like the phone’s battery. However, the rumors claim that Apple might actually use high-density batteries to compensate. But perhaps things aren’t going the way Apple hopes, so much so that the company could release a battery case for the iPhone 17 Air.
Optional iPhone 17 Air battery case
According to a report from The Information (paywall), internal testing has found that the percentage of users who will be able to use the iPhone 17 Air for a full day without charging is between 60% and 70%. For context, other iPhone models scored between 80% and 90%. This means that, in comparison, the battery life of the iPhone 17 Air is terrible.
To work around this issue, the report claims Apple will release a battery case for the iPhone 17 Air. No, Apple isn’t giving away the case; it will sell it as a separate accessory. Apple has created battery cases for its iPhones in the past, but they were eventually discontinued. Apple also created the MagSafe Battery Pack, but that, too, was discontinued.
This means that iPhone users who want a battery case or MagSafe battery pack must consider third-party options.
We’re worried about the foldable iPhone
If the report is accurate, we’re worried about Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone. Apple is rumored to launch its foldable iPhone in 2026. The iPhone 17 Air is supposed to serve as a testbed of sorts for the foldable. You see, Apple wants to make its foldable iPhone thin. Instead of launching the phone and then improving it on the next iteration, Apple is apparently using the iPhone 17 Air to test out the thin design and the use of more compact components.
The battery is one of them. We’ve seen how OPPO has achieved incredible battery life with the Find N5 by using silicon-carbon batteries instead of traditional lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are more dense, meaning that they can hold a similar capacity but in a smaller package.
This is, presumably, what Apple is going for with the iPhone 17 Air and foldable iPhone. However, if these rumors are right, it sounds like the foldable iPhone’s battery will be a disaster as well.
