Summary: One of the upcoming changes to iPadOS 19 is that it will look more like macOS. This is a good thing, as it will hopefully unlock more multitasking capabilities to give users a more computer-like experience.

Apple’s iPad occupies a weird spot in the company’s product lineup. For starters, Apple has positioned it as a laptop replacement or alternative, thanks to accessories like the Magic Keyboard. However, the iPad runs on iPadOS, a forked version of iOS. This means that software-wise, the iPad is more like the iPhone rather than the Mac.

More macOS similarities

However, Apple will attempt to make its software more cohesive. According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, one of the main design changes Apple is making to iPadOS 19 is that it will end up looking more like macOS rather than a reskinned version of iOS.

Gurman’s post says, “I’m told that this year’s upgrade will focus on productivity, multitasking and app window management — with an eye on the device operating more like a Mac. It’s been a long time coming, with iPad power users pleading with Apple to make the tablet more powerful.”

Apple has made several upgrades and changes to iPadOS over the years to make it feel more like a computer rather than a giant iPhone. Multitasking has improved. The dock is also reminiscent of the dock you would find on Mac computers. However, for the most part, it still feels like a gigantic iPhone with improved multitasking capabilities.

Making the iPad more computer-like

However, in the past, it was hard to blame Apple for that. The iPad used to be powered by Apple’s A-series of chipsets, the same family that powers the iPhone. But in recent years, Apple has been slowly upgrading its iPads with Apple Silicon. This means that, technically, apps that can run on macOS should be able to work with the iPad. It also unlocks a lot more power than the A-series, making it more like a computer than ever.

Hopefully, this potential change in UI will allow the iPad to gain some new features that will enable it to fully take advantage of all this power. Of course, under the hood, iPadOS is still essentially a forked version of iOS. Ultimately, the software limits its true capabilities.

Apple is also rumored to launch a massive 18.8-inch foldable iPad next year. This makes the iPadOS 19 update more important than ever because, honestly, at 18.8 inches, we’re well past the tablet category already.
