Big tech companies often file many patents on potential new developments or technologies. These documents can offer a glimpse into things they’re working on or experimenting with. Google isn’t usually the most innovative company when it comes to hardware, focusing primarily on software. However, Google has recently filed a curious patent for wireless charging technology through a smartphone’s display.
Traditional wireless charging works thanks to a coil discreetly integrated into the rear area of compatible smartphones. This allows the power transmission process to begin once the device detects a wireless charger. There are even different wireless charging standards with their features and perks. That said, has the idea of wirelessly charging your phone from the screen ever crossed your mind?
Google could develop wireless charging through your smartphone’s display, patent suggests
The patent, spotted by Xpertpick, was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It describes a mobile device where the wireless charging coil is located under the screen. It would be similar to the under-screen biometric unlock systems, but for wireless charging.
Implementing a similar system could allow for more versatility when charging your device. It could basically let you start the charging process by placing the phone on the charging dock either face up or face down. The technology could also allow for wireless power sharing through your device’s screen.
According to Google’s patent, the phone disables its screen and touch sensor when it detects a compatible charger. This allows for optimized power transfer before the charging begins. There are also modifications to the screen’s protective layer to ensure the efficiency of the process.
While the technology allows for more use cases, it seems that many won’t find it useful. We can’t find a real reason why users would want to wirelessly charge their phones face down. This method would even limit the screen’s visibility. Currently, there are many wireless charging docks designed to turn your phone into a kind of “digital frame” while it charges. Therefore, it doesn’t seem like a technology likely to be very successful or in demand.
