The Last Of Us Episode 5 Will Finally Introduce One Of The Game's Most Challenging Elements
One of the biggest story elements of The Last of Us games was how the infection spread, which was changed for the HBO adaptation. The removal of airborne spores divided fans, even though showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin said they weren't sure if they were going to incorporate them, as it didn't make sense at the time. However, just last month, they confirmed at SXSW that spores would premiere sometime this season, and from the trailer for next week's episode, that time is now.In the trailer, following last night's episode, we have Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) continuing on their quest to find the members of the WLF that attacked them, and the WLF gathering their numbers. There's also the revelation that the infection can be spread through airborne spores that are made from rotting bodies of the infected. In the game, we learn that even after an infected individual has died, the fungus will continue to grow, consuming the body's mass to form a fruiting body and releasing spores that infect any human who breathes them. Characters that aren't Ellie have to use gas masks to prevent this. It should be noted that this was how Dina discovered Ellie's secret power of immunity in the game.
