Suikoden 1 Spoiler-Free Recruitment Guide: All Character Locations

Recruitment is a key feature of Suikoden 1 that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Most RPGs of the time featured a handful of party members. This game, on the other hand, features 108 characters to team up with. Unfortunately, some recruits are missable in Suikoden 1, so we’ve written this spoiler-free guide to save you some heartache.

How does recruitment work in Suikoden 1?

The narrative of Suikoden tends to unfold in chunks. Between these, NPCs will move about or get new dialogue, and new recruits will spring up. After every major event, you’ll want to explore and look for new characters to join your cause.

Many characters in Suikoden 1 are recruited as part of the story, and many others just require you to speak to them at the right time. However, you’ll have to meet specific requirements to get a few to join your party.

Below, we’ve listed all 108 Stars of Destiny in Suikoden 1 in order of recruitment. We’ve kept this as spoiler-free as possible, and we’ll just put their location if there are no special conditions for recruiting them.

Note that the order below refers to when a character is permanently recruited. Some of them may join your party temporarily prior to these points.

Apple: Go to Mathiu’s house in Seika and talk to her.
Flik: Joins as part of the story.
Hellion: Find them at Teien Inn.
Mina: Buy the toe shoes at HQ or Antei, find them at Toran Lake Castle, or get them as a drop from Holly Spirits. Equip the toe shoes on Tir, and speak with Mina at Antei Inn to recruit her.
Chapman: Speak with him at the Antei Armor Shop.
Jeane: Talk to her at the Antei Rune Shop.
Jabba: Fight Holly Fairies until you get the Nameless Urn in a drop. Bring one to Jabba in Rikon and have him appraise it, and he’ll join you.
Lotte: Talk to Lotte at the Rikon Inn, then head to Kaku. Try to catch her cat and then return to her, and she’ll join the group.
Gen: Joins as part of the story.
Kamandol: Joins as part of the story.
Kimberly: Joins as part of the story.
Tesla: Joins as part of the story.
Luikan: Joins as part of the story.
Milich Oppenheimer: Spare him after the battle and let him join the team.
Qion: Find Qion at the entrance to Antei.
Esmeralda: Fight Nightmares in Soniere until one drops an Opal. Bring the Opal to Esmeralda at the Antei Inn, and she’ll join.
Ivanov: Speak with him at Scarleticia Castle with Milich in the party and Ivanov will join.
Kasios: Same as above.
Anji: Add Tai Ho and Yam Koo to your party and speak with him at the pirate’s hideout.
Leonardo: Joins with Anji.
Kanak: Same as above.
Kasumi: Joins as part of the story.
Georges: Beat a record in the card game at Kirov Inn.
Sarah: Find her in the middle of Kirov, and she’ll ask for soap. You’ll then need to speak to the man near the armor shop, a man by the inn, a woman at the bottom right of Kirov, and a person on the right side of the inn. Now you can buy the required item at the shop. Once you’ve completed her request, Sarah will join your party.
Lester: Go inside the houses to the left and right of Sarah and taste the stew. After that head to the large house in the center of Kirov to find Lester. Speak with him and he’ll join.
Blackman: Go to north Kalekka. Mind the flowers and speak Blackman to recruit him. If you accidentally step on the flowers, leave the screen and return to try again.
Kessler: Find in the secret factory.
Ledon: Find in the secret factory.
Kage: Locate him in the secret factory and pay him 20,000 Potch to join.
Melodye: Find the Sound Crystal in a box in Kalekka. Find Melodye in Kirov, give him the crystal, and he’ll join up.
Kun To: Joins as part of the story.
Meese: Joins as part of the story.
Ronnie Bell: Joins as part of the story.
Alen: Joins as part of the story.
Grenseal: Joins as part of the story.
Kirke: Leave Lorimar and return, then speak to Kirke to recruit him.
Marco: Win 5,000 Potch from him in Warriors Village.
Moose: Add Maas, Meese, and Mose to your party and speak with him in the northeastern house in Warrior’s Village.
Fukien: Joins as part of the story.
Morgan: Find them in the back of Qlon Temple.
Zen: Purchase the colored seeds in shops in Rikon, Teien, and Warrior’s Village. Find Zen in the northeast corner of Qlon and give him the seeds to recruit him.
Hugo: Find the War Scroll in Qlon Dungeon and give it to him at Qlon Temple.
Window: Find the Window Rune in Qlon Dungeon and give it to him at Warrior’s Village.
Eikel: When Tir is level 40, find Eikel in northeast Teien and speak with him.
Quincy: Recruit at least 80 people and speak with him on the bridge at Garan.
Rubi: Raise Kirkis to level 40 and make sure he’s in your party. Find Rubi in east Great Forest and speak with him.
Hix: Joins as part of the story.
Tengaar: Joins as part of the story.
Fuma: Find him in the east part of Dragon Knight’s Fortress.
Kreutz: Place Humphrey in your party and speak with Kreutz at the Dragon Knight’s Fortress.
Milia: Joins as part of the story.
Joshua: Joins as part of the story.
Futch: Joins as part of the story.
Leon Silverberg: When the castle is fully upgraded, speak with Leon, then return to HQ and talk to Mathiu to get a letter. Deliver the letter to Leon at Kalekka to recruit him.
Mace: Add Maas, Meese, Moose, and Mose to your party and speak with him at Seek Valley.
Pesmerga: Return to Neclord’s Castle and speak with Pesmerga to recruit him.
Crowley: Find the secret passage in the Cave of the Past by going north, heading down the stairs, going all the way to the right, then south, then right, then south, then up the stairs. After that, take the stairs down, then south, then south again. Check against the southern wall to find the secret passage and recruit Crowley by speaking to him.
Clive: He randomly appears at the Rikon Inn. If you visit and he’s not there, leave the whole town and return until he shows up.
Griffith: Joins as part of the story.
Taggart: Joins as part of the story.
Warren: Joins as part of the story.
Kasim Hazil: Joins as part of the story.
Vincent de Boule: Head back to where Warren joined and speak with Vincent to recruit him.
Maximilian: Find him in Northern Checkpoint and speak with him.
