The Pixel Watch has always had media controls at its disposal, letting you adjust a few things with just a couple of quick taps, but now they’re getting more robust with some additional features in the latest Wear OS software update. The update, which should be rolling out to watches as of right now, includes a handful of new controls that aren’t available in the current version of the media controls.
As of right now, without the update, you can pause, play, skip tracks, and turn the volume up or down. That seems handy enough. That said, it’s less than what’s possible from the media controls on your phone in most music streaming apps. These additional controls will expand the number of things you can do and ultimately add more convenience to media playback from your smartwatch.
Pixel Watch media controls gain access to song queues
As reported by 9To5Google, there are new media playback controls being added to the Pixel Watch. After checking my own Pixel Watch 3, the controls aren’t visibly present. So, Google is likely rolling this change to the media controls out in waves. Your mileage may vary, so you’ll want to check and see if it’s available on your own Pixel Watch.
These controls also aren’t popping up in apps like Spotify. That being said, the report mentions that these new controls aren’t supported in all apps. They are visible, but just unusable. So there’s a good chance that not seeing them in Spotify has to do with the controls just not being on my personal watch at all.
As for the new controls that are included, there are a few spread across two new buttons in the interface. First, there’s a new button on the left side of the display that looks like a little music note with three lines next to it. Tapping this opens your Up Next queue and displays the next 24 songs. 9To5Google mentions that this is the case with YouTube Music. So, it sounds like it won’t necessarily apply to other apps, if other apps even get the controls.
There’s also now an overflow button on the right side of the display. Tapping on this will have controls for shuffling songs and repeating tracks. There’s a thumbs-up button as well to tell the app you enjoyed the song you were currently listening to. Additionally, you can access the Up Next queue from this menu with a dedicated button here as well. You’ll need to make sure the Wear Media app is updated to the latest version to see these. This app is located in the Play Store on the watch.
