When Meta first launched Threads, it was an ad-free experience. This is because the app was new, and Meta probably wanted to get it right before flooding it with ads. Well, the bad news is that the ad-free experience has ended. Meta has announced that it will roll out ads to Threads to more countries worldwide.

Ads coming to Threads

According to Meta, ads will roll out to users in more than 30 countries starting today. “Starting today, a small number of advertisers will test ads in Threads to help campaigns go further by reaching the growing Threads community. Businesses will be able to extend their existing Meta ad campaigns to Threads—without the need for bespoke creative or additional resourcing—by simply checking a box in Ads Manager. This can help businesses reach more people in more places across Meta’s family of apps and can improve advertiser outcomes.”

Prior to this, Meta tested out ads on Threads in January earlier this year, but only with a small set of users in the US and Japan. Now, with this announcement, more users will start seeing ads on the platform. It’s honestly not a surprising move by Meta. The company’s revenue pretty much comes from ads. In fact, it is estimated that Instagram alone accounts for more than half of Meta’s ad revenue.

Threads has grown into its own

Meta launched Threads back in 2023. The app was initially positioned as an alternative to X (formerly known as Twitter). This was because Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter was a messy and chaotic affair. It was unclear how it would proceed and what would happen to the app.

Meta took this opportunity to launch Threads in hopes of capitalizing on the chaos and providing users with an alternative platform. Meta wasn’t alone in trying to launch an alternative to Twitter. There are already some options, such as Mastodon and Blue Sky.

To date, Threads hasn’t exactly been a runaway success. While it was initially positioned as an alternative to Twitter, both platforms have their own set of user groups, with Threads having grown into its own rather than being an outright Twitter clone.
