It seems $700 for a video game console may be too much. Sales for Sony‘s enhanced PS5 Pro have fallen off since its launch in November 2024. So much so, it has started to fall behind PS4 Pro sales when comparing similar time frames.

Did PS5 Pro’s price of admission impact hardware sales?

Circana’s Mat Piscatella recently posted his January 2025 U.S. Video Game Market Highlights on BlueSky. According to the analyst, general video game hardware spending has dropped pretty significantly. Specifically, double-digit percentage declines were present across all platforms, including PS5, compared to a year ago.

“January video game hardware spending dropped 45% when compared to a year ago, to $205 million,” said Piscatella. “This is the lowest January total for video game hardware spending since the $131 million reached in January 2020.”

“Double-digit percentage declines compared to a year ago were seen across all major console platforms,” Piscatella continued. “PlayStation 5 hardware spending dipped by 38% year-on-year, with Xbox Series declining by 50% and Switch 53%.”

A BlueSky user asked how PS5 Pro was tracking in comparison to PS4 Pro. This is comparing similar time frames, which would be three months after launch. Piscatella confirms the upgraded PS5 is falling behind its PS4 counterpart.

“PS5 Pro has fallen behind PS4 Pro’s pace,” Piscatella responded. “Digital SKUs accounted for 49% of PS5 HW units in Jan and 88% of XBS units.”

During its launch month, PS5 Pro units sold were 12% lower than PS4 Pro launch month sales. However, PS5 Pro dollar sales were 50% higher than the PS4 Pro. Although no specifics numbers are given, it seems the PS5 Pro has fallen since Piscatella announced those statistics.

At launch, the price of the PS5 Pro was a whopping $699.99. In comparison, the PS4 Pro was $399.99, a full $300 less than the Sony’s most recent enhanced console. Although there can be a number of reasons why the PS5 Pro is struggling in comparison to the PS4 Pro, it’s not much of a stretch to assume its price is a contributing factor to the diminishing sales numbers.
