OmniVision introduces its first 1-inch camera sensor
OmniVision 1 inch camera

Summary: OmniVision has finally boarded the bandwagon of 1-inch image sensor manufacturers. It has introduced the OV50X, a 50MP sensor with a 1.6-micron pixel in a 1-inch format. The OV50X is the world’s first 1-inch sensor with TheiaCel technology, which offers best-in-class performance in all lighting conditions. It could start appearing on flagship smartphones by the end of the year.

OmniVision has launched its first camera sensor with a 1-inch optical format. It has specially designed this sensor for flagship smartphones that require high dynamic range (HDR) videos. Dubbed the OmniVision OV50X, the image sensor promises enhanced video performance and “the mobile phone industry’s highest dynamic range.” OmniVision’s latest camera sensor will challenge Sony’s 1-inch and Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL sensors.

The OV50X is a 50MP sensor with a 1.6-micron (µm) pixel in a 1-inch optical format. It is capable of capturing 18 stops of dynamic range. Furthermore, the image sensor can record 8K videos at 180 frames per second. The company has entered an elite tier like Sony with the new sensor.

Also, the OV50X is the world’s first 1-inch sensor with TheiaCel technology. The company promises that this tech offers best-in-class photos and videos in all lighting conditions. Besides, the camera sensor supports 4-cell binning for 12.5MP and can perform 3-channel HDR at 60 frames per second. OmniVision says it has designed the sensor with the professional videographer and photographer in mind.

Quad Phase Detection autofocus support

OmniVision’s latest sensor also flaunts Quad Phase Detection (QPD) autofocus, which the company says offers fast and reliable focusing in different light conditions. It can record “movie-grade” videos and offers close to 110 dB of dynamic range—the highest range possible in smartphones. OmniVision built the sensor using its PureCel Plus-S stacked-die technology, which delivers excellent performance in low-light conditions.

OmniVision will start the mass production of the 1-inch sensor in Q3 2025. It also said that the phone manufacturers are currently sampling the flagship image sensor. The phone companies could start using the sensor in the flagship smartphones by the end of this year.
