Competition in the artificial intelligence segment is increasingly fierce. Major names are constantly announcing innovations and advancements that drive the growth and advancement of AI-based developments. Last year, Anthropic announced the MCP protocol for communication between AI models and databases or data systems. Now, Google has announced that it will also adopt Anthropic’s MCP for data management in its AI models.

If you’re not aware, Anthropic is the parent company of Claude AI models. Claude’s popularity has been growing for some time. This LLM powers Amazon’s upgraded Alexa+ assistant, for instance. In February, the company announced Claude 3.7 Sonnet as the latest big update to the platform. In March, Anthropic began testing Claude’s web access, a feature it still lacked. The firm has been working hard to close the gap with its competitors and try to surpass them in some aspects.

That said, Anthropic has more AI products, such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This protocol facilitates two-way communication between data systems—large or small—and AI platforms. Developers can use it to build their AI-powered apps and services. Anthropic even open-sourced MCP, facilitating its adoption as a standard.

In fact, the company only launched MCP in November 2024, but companies like Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph already support it, as reported by TechCrunch. Even OpenAI confirmed a few weeks ago that it will use MCP in the future. Now Google, arguably the largest of the bunch, is joining the bandwagon, potentially giving the protocol a major boost.

MCP is a good protocol, and it’s rapidly becoming an open standard for the agentic AI era,” said Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis on X/Twitter. “Look forward to developing it further with the MCP team and others in the industry.”

That said, there are still no details about Google’s implementation of MCP. We only know that the company will integrate it in some way with the Gemini AI models and SDK. Hopefully, more news will emerge soon.
