Summary: Google could bring a Raise to Speak feature to Wear OS that will let you summon the Google Assistant without needing to say “Hey Google.” However, we don’t know if Google wants to make this exclusive to Pixel Watches or bring it to all Wear OS watches.
Modern tech is all about making things more intuitive, and this involves limiting the number of steps it takes to accomplish simple tasks. Well, Google thinks that summoning Google Assistant on Wear OS smartwatch could be more intuitive.
To summon the Assistant, all you need to do is say the “Hey Google” or “Okay, Google” hotword. However, the company seems to think that this action involves too much work, so it’s working to make the process more streamlined.
Google could bring a Raise to Speak feature to Wear OS
It’s all about the little changes sometimes. Google is working on a simple feature for its Wear OS devices that could eliminate one step keeping you from summoning Google Assistant.
The Raise to Speak feature will allow the user to simply raise their watch to their mouth and begin speaking what they want the Assistant to do. They won’t have to say “Hey Google.”
We have obvious concerns, like how accurate the feature will be. Google will need to ensure that the watch will be able to identify every time you raise your watch to speak. Also, we’re not sure how many people will like the watch listening every time they raise their hand. Lastly, if the microphone is constantly activating, it could have an effect on the battery.
In any case, there’s no telling when this feature will come out. The folks at Android Authority, in collaboration with AssembleDebug, found this feature hidden within Google app v16.14.39 beta. As such, Google didn’t officially announce this feature. We don’t know if the company plans to release Raise to Speak.
If it does, the jury is still out on whether Google will keep it tied to its Pixel ecosystem of features or if it will push it to more Wear OS watches.
