New Update – Your Android Device To Restart Automatically If You Kept Idle

Google has introduced a significant security enhancement for Android devices that automatically reboots phones and tablets after extended periods of inactivity. 

This new auto-restart feature, included in the latest Google Play services update (version 25.14), represents an important step forward in protecting user data from unauthorized access.

This security feature is specifically designed for Android phones and tablets, excluding other device categories such as Android Auto, TV, and WearOS. 

The Auto-Reboot Mechanism

With the latest Google Play services update, Android devices will now automatically restart if they remain locked for three consecutive days (72 hours), 9 to 5 Google noticed.

When triggered, the auto-reboot function forces devices into a highly secure state that prevents unauthorized access to sensitive information.

The release notes for Google Play services version 25.14, under the Security & Privacy section, state that “Your device automatically restarts if locked for 3 consecutive days. ” This enhancement arrives as part of Google Play services 25.14.32, which began rolling out to devices on April 8, 2025.

The technical foundation of this security feature relies on the concept of “Before First Unlock” (BFU) state. When an Android device reboots, it enters this BFU state that encrypts all data files and disables biometric authentication methods until the device PIN has been entered.

On Pixel devices, users will notice a message at the bottom of the lockscreen stating “Unlock for all features and data”. 

This indicates that the device is in BFU state, where data extraction via technical means becomes virtually impossible without knowing the user’s PIN. 

In contrast, devices in the “After First Unlock” (AFU) state – when a user has already authenticated with their PIN – may be more vulnerable to sophisticated data extraction techniques.

This type of system-level reboot command is similar to what the new security feature implements, though the actual implementation occurs via Google Play services rather than requiring developer intervention.

The introduction of this feature appears to be a response to growing concerns about physical device security. 

When malicious actors obtain physical access to a smartphone, they often attempt to extract data using specialized tools. However, accessing a device in the BFU state presents significantly greater challenges for these unauthorized extraction attempts.

“While gaining access to a smartphone in the BFU state is still theoretically possible, it presents a far greater challenge for malicious entities,” notes security experts analyzing the new feature.

Google isn’t the first to implement such a feature. Apple introduced a similar “Inactivity Reboot” functionality in iOS 18.1 last year, which triggers a device restart after four days of being locked. 

GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused Android distribution, has offered an even more aggressive auto-reboot feature that defaults to 18 hours but allows users to configure intervals between 10 minutes and 72 hours.

Rollout and Availability

Google Play Services 25.14 is being rolled out and should reach most Android devices over the coming weeks. 

Since this security enhancement is delivered through Google Play services rather than requiring a full operating system update, it will likely reach a significantly broader range of Android devices across various manufacturers and Android versions.

As of now, Google has not specified whether users will have the option to disable this feature or if there will be any user-facing notification when an automatic reboot occurs. 

The feature appears to be implemented as a system-level change enabled by default within the Privacy & Security section of Google Play services.

For most users, this enhancement will operate seamlessly in the background, providing an additional layer of protection without requiring any configuration or user intervention.
