Google's Costly Strategy to Secure Default Status on Samsung Devices Revealed
Google Gemini Live AM AH 2

Summary: It was just revealed that Google is paying Samsung an “enormous sum” to Samsung in order to keep Gemini pre-installed on the company’s devices. This is not first such deal with Samsung, this is in addition to its multi-billion deal for Google Search.

As many of you know by now, Google pays Apple billions of dollars to remain the default search engine on Apple computers, smartphones and tablets. Well, Apple is not the only company included in such deals, and some additional information just surfaced, regarding Samsung.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Google also pays Samsung an “enormous sum” for Gemini to be pre-installed on Samsung’s Galaxy devices. This detail was revealed during the antitrust trial between Google and the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

This is not the first such revelation concerning Samsung, however. Back in November 2023, during the Epic Games vs Google lawsuit, it was revealed that Google paid Samsung $8 billion over four years to pre-install Google Search engine and Play Store on Galaxy devices.

With that being said, Google is now in the middle of the remedies trial for its Search dominance. The company lost that trial to the DOJ last year. We had to wait until now for things to start unfolding, though, in terms of remedies.

The remedies trial for Google started yesterday, following the company’s defeat in court

A three-week trial kicked off yesterday, as we’re waiting to see what will Google need to do in order to appease the Court. DOJ has considerable demands, which Google does not see fitting, as they could undermine American economic and tech leadership. That’s what the company said.

Google is under threat of being broken up. The Court could force Google to sell of Chrome, or something of the sort. It all depends on what remedies end up being thrown in Google’s direction.

The company could be banned from making deals such as the ones it did with Apple and Samsung, moving forward. It remains to be seen, but that was one of the main points of the whole trial. Why? Because it helps Google keep its dominance.
