It’s the first movie in the Gintama franchise and is a retelling of the Benizakura Arc, though with new and improved animation. It also included shorts where the characters talk with each other and Warner Bros in Gintama’s typical meta humor. The Benizakura Arc is the ninth arc in Gintama, taking place over the course of 5 episodes in the anime, and 2 volumes (10 chapters) in the manga. This makes it the first long arc in the story, which could explain its popularity. That it focused on Gintoki and Katsura, as well as introduced Takasugi and his Kiheitai, could also have to do with it. Whatever the reason, its popularity among the fans likely contributed to it being the only compilation film in the franchise.
