Summary: Google has just released Android 16 Beta 4, which is the last scheduled Beta update for Android 16. The stable version is set to ship on June 3 for Pixel devices and AOSP.
After teasing it yesterday, Google has now released Android 16 Beta 4. This is also the last scheduled update for the Android 16 beta program. The next update should be the stable release for Pixel devices, which is still expected on June 3.
Since this is the fourth and final beta, there are not a whole lot of changes here. This is mostly bug fixes and optimizations as Google gets closer to the final release in a little over a month’s time.
The first developer preview for Android 16 landed back in November, which was a full four months earlier than usual. And now the stable release is scheduled for about 3 months earlier than normal, in June versus September or October normally. This coincides with Google moving up the Pixel release schedule as well. Having the Pixel 9 launch in September and Pixel 9a in April, versus October and May, respectively.
What’s new in Android 16?
As has been the case for the past few versions of Android, there are not a lot of user-facing changes with Android 16. A lot of the changes are going to be under-the-hood, and changing how different things are handled, with APIs as well. All of the user-facing features are now included in the quarterly Pixel Feature Drops.
However, one of the bigger changes here is the fact that Android is getting Live Updates. These are similar to Apple’s Live Activities. And while some Android OEMs had already added something like this to their skins, Android now supports it on the platform level, so apps can build this in and it’ll work across all Android devices, regardless of manufacturer.
Android 16 is expected to be available for the Pixel 6 and later, when it does land on June 3.
