Summary: During TED2025, Google’s Android XR head wore the company’s XR glasses. It would have been tough to spot the glasses if you weren’t paying attention.
Google is all about AI, but the company has its toe in just about every tech industry. One of them is XR (Extended Reality), and Android XR is proof of that. While much of the attention is on Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, Google has been cooking up its own goodies. We’ve heard rumors about the company working on its own pair of XR glasses.
Since we’ve only been following rumblings about these glasses, there was no telling when we were going to get some sort of visual on them. Fast forward to TED2025.
Google’s XR glasses appear at TED2025
TED2025 kicked off on April 7th in Vancouver, and we’ve seen a bunch of interesting people spreading their expertise with the world. Just recently, Shahram Izadi gave a speech about XR technology. He’s the head of Google’s Android XR division.
For most people, he was just a normal guy wearing a sweater and glasses. However, looking closer, we see that they’re no ordinary glasses. He was wearing a prototype pair of Google’s XR glasses at TED2025. Looking at them, they look like a standard pair of specs, albeit with the standard thick temples you get with other smart glasses.
During the presentation, he demonstrated their capabilities by translating live, scanning a book, and more. As you could guess, they will communicate with Gemini, which is similar to what Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses do. Since Gemini is much more integrated into your phone’s operating system, we’re sure that you’ll be able to do more with Google’s offering.
In fact, Izadi said, “These glasses work with your phone, streaming back and forth, allowing the glasses to be very lightweight and access all of your phone apps.” So, we’re excited to see what Google will do with the XR space.
At this point, there’s very little information about these glasses floating around. So, we don’t know anything about their price, capabilities, or availability. We’ll just have to be patient.
